Federation Council’s first ever elected councillors were sworn in on Tuesday, September 19 and were, at the time of the Free Press going to print, attending their first monthly meeting.
Council’s General Manager Chris Gillard conducted the formal part last week with the nine councillors swearing on the bible to perform their best service for the Federation Council and council area.
Councillors were accompanied by family members and a near-packed chamber room of the Corowa Civic Centre was welcomed by Federation Council Administrator Mike Eden who was, at that stage, performing his last official function.
“Congratulations to those nine councillors,” Mr Eden said. “It was a very dignified and well run campaign by the 42 (candidates) who put their hands up.”
He repeated his message of congratulations then told the newly elected councillors resulting from voting day of September 9: “I’m sure you’ll do a good job.”
Mr Gillard acknowledged the effort of Mr Eden over the past 15 months. “Despite a lot of opinions, I know the hard work done, that he’s brought to the job.”
Formalities over, councillors and family members mingled over refreshments, with, among other things, the appointment in a few days time of mayor and deputy mayor on their minds.
