Parker Pies come up gold

Parker Pies in Rutherglen, currently celebrating its 21st birthday, has picked up some additional presents at this year’s Great Aussie Pie Competition.

The competition was held recently at the Darling Harbour International Convention Centre in Sydney.
Three pies were entered and owner Fred Parker and his team have received medals with all three: gold for his plain meat pie, gold for his chunky beef pie and silver for the steak and mushroom pie.
The competition is held annually and is the pinnacle of the pie making art in Australia.
The event attracts thousands of entries from all over the country and is judged by an elite panel of 16 judges including chefs, bakers and a range of industry representatives.
There are ten categories of pies appraised over the four-day event including plain meat, gourmet meat, seafood, poultry and vegetarian.
Each year sees a myriad of new and innovative pie fillings and flavours, and the 2017 event was no exception.
However, the Holy Grail of Australian pie makers is to get gold in the plain meat pie category, which always has the most entries and forms the basis of most pie shop’s sales around the country.
Mr Parker said he was extremely proud with the hat-trick of awards.
“We’re really proud of the range of gourmet pies that we’ve developed over the years, but to be awarded gold in the plain meat pie category tells us that we’re doing things right,” he said.
“It’s a hotly contested category, highly competitive and considered the Gold Logie winner.”
Mr Parker said Parker Pies first entered the competition in 2000.
“We were overwhelmed to be runner-up on a count back for the best plain meat pie in Australia that year,” he said.
“We’re celebrating 21 years in business this year so we thought we would enter three pies in the competition to see if we’re still up to the mark.
“We’re very proud to have achieved the two golds and one silver from our three entries.
“I think this is a testament to quality standards we strive for and the quality local ingredients we use.”
