The Rutherglen Swim Club turned on the heat for its annual Southern Division swim pennant, hosting almost 200 swimmers from Myrtleford, Beechworth, Tallangata, Mount Beauty and Corryong swim clubs of the Ovens and Murray District Swimming Association.
Temperatures reached 42 degrees on the January 21, but the Rutherglen Swimming pool was a cool, shimmering blue and the heat couldn’t slow down the 27 Rutherglen swimmers who swam on the day.
The team competed in 71 races, gaining 15 first places, 13 second places and 22 third places in a range of individual and relay races.
Rutherglen swimmers train in all four strokes and are encouraged to compete in a variety of races and were able to demonstrate these skills by gaining 18 personal bests on the day.
The club had 12 new swimmers this season, and Sunday’s pennant was the very first competition for Sasha Glare, Angus and Olivia Williams, and Ruth Weller.
Congratulations to each of them for putting their nerves aside, maintaining the team’s momentum and gaining more points on the scoreboard.
The Rutherglen Swim Club is proud of its swimmers and would like to recognise each of them for their commitment to sportsmanship, fitness and community spirit.
We would like to thank coaches Sarah Hernan and Sam Quick for running five training sessions every week, concentrating on swimming skills and improved fitness.
We would also like to thank all the Southern Division clubs for demonstrating great sportsmanship and helping us make this a fantastic day for everyone.
To balance out this sizzling event, the club catered a hamburger and sausage barbecue stall, ten fantastic raffle gift packages and a jelly bean guessing contest.
Special thanks to all those in the community who continually support the Rutherglen Swim Club, and to this year’s sponsors: Indigo Shire, Rutherglen Newsagency, James & Co Wines, Thistle & Fern, Pfeiffer’s Wines, Rutherglen Bakery, Rutherglen Wine Centre, Rutherglen Pizza, Cofield Wines, Miegel’s Pharmacy, Poachers Paradise, Campbell’s Wines, Valentine’s Bakery and the fabulous Rutherglen Pool staff.
