Silver Key Cafe in Rutherglen remains boarded up but work is set to start soon on rebuilding the popular store destroyed by fire last July.

Rutherglen’s Silver Key Cafe owners hope to see the rebuilding of their fire damaged fish and chip shop begin by the end of the month.

Dawn and Frank Leahy told the Free Press that building plans had finally been approved by Indigo Shire Council and now they were just waiting on builders’ quotes.
Fire gutted the shop in Main Street last July, leaving the family heartbroken.
“People often approach me in the street and ask when we will be back up and running,” Mrs Leahy said.
“We are very keen to get back to work and start a new chapter.”
Mrs Leahy said the cafe would look “totally different”.
“We have had to come up to new regulations, which will mean a wheelchair ramp at the front of the shop and some other changes,” she said.
