Corowa Market Report

by
April 11, 2018

Michael Unthank from BUR Albury with Brad Ewing and Bailey Constable from Howlong who sold 22 shorn lambs for $133.

Corowa Market held on Monday, April 9 with 9,598 lambs yarded a decrease of 2,140 from previous market, 3074 sheep yarded a decrease of 53.

Lamb numbers eased below 10,000 head (2140 less) as selling resumed after the Easter holidays.
Quality overall was plainer, although there were still some very good pens of supplementary lambs on offer.
Demand was weaker, with a couple of regular processors not operating while others appeared only willing to purchase at lower prices.
One agency did pass-in about 500 of their lead run of heavy lambs due to limited interest, with other auctioneers passing in a few pens throughout the market.
However the sale did improve late in the day for heavy lambs in an erratic result.
The heavier slaughter lambs were $6 to $15/head cheaper compared to a fortnight ago.
Lighter weight crossbred lambs were also cheaper although they hold their value better than the heavier pens.
Export lambs sold to a top of $215 for a pen estimated around 34kg cwt, and it was one of just six sales above $200/head for extra heavy lambs weighing 30kg and above.
Pens of heavy trade weight lambs over 24kg cwt mostly sold from $152 to $160/head.
The medium trade weight lambs in the 22-24kg category ranged from $136 to $153 to average $146/head.
On a carcase basis a range of 570c to 600c/kg covered most export and domestic sales.
Restockers stepped into the market for plain conditioned lambs with frame-size, which helped support prices for lighter weight pens.
Merino lambs received some of the most severe discounting of the market, with lack of fat cover an issue at times.
Bidding for sheep eased down from the very high levels of recent weeks, although the good lines of mutton still made above 420c/kg cwt.
Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $150 and merinos to $144/head.
