Corowa A grade travelled to Baranduda for their first game of the year after the Christmas/New year break. Captain Dan Athanitis lost the toss and Corowa was sent in to bat first.
Matthew Wilson (26) got the boys off to another good start before having his castle knocked over off a good delivery.
Matt Grantham (71) was the backbone of Corowa’s innings batting beautifully before he was dismissed trying to up the run rate towards the end of the innings.
Dan Athanitis (43) smashed the bowlers all over the park including a few massive 6s in a good cameo along with Jarred Lane (28) at the back end of the innings lifting Corowa to a very good score of 7 for 234.Baranduda got off to a flying start in the run chase with Corowa boys a bit slow to get going in the field.
A brilliant bit of fielding from Nathan Rhodes resulting in a direct hit run out got the away side going before Jarred Lane (2 for 9) bowled a tight spell to peg Baranduda back after their fast start.
Daniel Athanitis (2 for 35) also bowled well before Nathan Rhodes (4 for 26) cleaned up the tail. Corowa bowled out Baranduda for 177 winning by 57 runs in another good all-round performance by the A grade.
The boys will look to keep improving in the race to finals as they move into 4th position on the ladder.
Next week A grade will be looking to stay on the winners list when they take on Barnawartha/ Chiltern at Barnawartha next week.
B Grade
B Grade have celebrated Greg Burgess’s 300th game with a big win over second placed Baranduda at Ball Park.
Batting first the batsmen were all looking good with the run rate hovering at 6 runs an over for the whole innings.
Jeremy Carr continued his good form with 78, while Doug Lavis (31), Ryan Beveridge (27), Will Seymour (21) and Scott Wilson (20*) lent good support as Corowa finished their 40 overs with 244.
In reply Baranduda were on the ropes early with Burgess picking up 2 wickets along with a wicket for Aaron Phibbs reduced Baranduda to 3 for 20 after 10 overs.
The contest was as good as over when they got three wickets in three balls with Joe Hansen collected two wickets and then Patrick Lavis collected one to reduce Baranduda to 6 for 54 in the 18th over.
Baranduda batted out the remaining overs to finish at 9 for 123 with Burgess taking 3 for 12 off 8 overs in his milestone game.
The side has the bye this Saturday.
C Grade Div 1
Round 12 saw C Grade head into Wodonga to take on Belvoir at Willow Park.
Danny Osbourne won the toss and elected to win as it turned out.
Although the batting seemed slow initially Kuschert found the boundary with ease, as he normally does, before being dismissed after making his maiden half century.
This brought the return of Jake Beveridge from the cricket wilderness at number 3.
Looking like Sassy the Sasquatch he dragged his bat to the crease, took centre and entered sicko mode.
The big fella smashed the ball anywhere he felt like it, falling on 43 with 6 boundary’s and a six off only 39 balls.
But it was his mate down the other end Angus McFarland who crafted a magnificent innings in steamy conditions that set up the total.
Eventually falling 12 runs short of the hundred mark he can none the less be proud of his maturity and ability to bat to the conditions and state of the game, a fine effort.
Raggett and Minogue were able to smash a few cheap boundary’s in the last few overs to finish the innings at a whopping 258.
With the run rate required over 6 Belvoir were going to have to go hard early but as has been the pattern this season the bowling and fielding was far too good and with pace and spin options aplenty, it was only a matter of time.
Belvoir’s captain Hartney put in a brave effort but even he fell to the crafty medium pace of Closter, who proved too good for the experienced campaigner.
The highlight of the innings undoubtably a miraculous catch to remove the number 11 at short cover by Alex Lavis.
His inability to hold catches while keeping wickets made the effort all the more spectacular, although the presence of a third umpire may have found some grass on the ball, but as it stands it’s in the book.
The boys sit comfortably in 4th but face the top 3 sides in the next 3 weeks and will be calling on all their skill to prove they are a genuine premiership threat.
Time to sort out the men from the boys.
C Grade Div 2
Div 2 went down by 7 wickets to top of the ladder North Albury Gold in Albury.
It was a struggle from the start for the side after batting first as they fell to 6 for 28.
But with Matt Shipard making 30, along with 15 from Luke Moloney and 12* from Ryan Mills enabled the side to post 106.
The side struggled for wickets as North Albury only lost 3 wickets as they made the runs after 19 overs.
Riley Carter bowled well to take 2 for 11 while Brydon Robins collected a wicket as well.
