That was the statement and message conveyed to The Free Press by Corowa Rutherglen Football Club President Graham Hosier.
Speaking before this week’s selection of teams, Mr Hosier said: “On the football side, we have five or six new players who will make a big difference this year.
“We’ve recruited well. The same applies to the netball, with very good recruitment also.
“Get down and support our footballers and netballers, and buy your memberships.”
The senior netball team has recruited well, with star goalshooter from North Albury Grace Senior and former teammate and other shooter Jess Bice.
“It’s a whole new shooting side,” senior netball coach Georgie Bruce told The Free Press. “We also have Jenni Barrett from Thurgoona in defence.”
Georgie was extremely pleased with all netball sides last Saturday against Wang Magpies, with wins by A, B and C Netball teams and the Under 16s being right in the game until the last quarter.
Playing against last year’s premiers, Corowa Rutherglen’s A Grade won 57-52. “It was one of the highest scoring games in quite a few years. There weren’t too many mistakes and there was fluid movement,” Georgie said.
“I’m super proud of them. The highest margin was four goals until we finished five in front. It was see-sawing but we stuck to our game plan.
“It was huge. They raised their premiership flags - that’s good, we stood with them. That can be a bit of ‘a monkey on your back’. It was a twilight game, on their home ground. To win was awesome.”
Georgie, who plays and also coaches B Grade, steered her team to a win, also against last year’s B Grade premiers.
In her fifth season at the helm, the part-time school teacher in Yarrawonga is well aware one win doesn’t win a flag. “We are just taking one game at a time,” Georgie said. “Yarrawonga will be tough.”
The Roos/Pigeons football clash of yesteryear was traditionally referred to as the ‘Rumble on the River’ with close encounters between the two teams.
Corowa Rutherglen’s football and netball teams are building. Supporters will become impressed with the new-look football and netball teams but all Roos’ teams need your support. The McDonald’s Family Fun Zone with it’s free inflatable footy playground will also be at the ground this Saturday from 1pm. So get on down to the action this Saturday!
