Corowa Fire and Rescue, Wahgunyah CFA and NSW Rural Fire Service arrived at the caravan park at around 8pm on Saturday night to find two vans engulfed in flames and the fire spreading to other sites.
Fire fighters in breathing apparatus’ quickly attacked the blaze which took approximately 30 minutes to control before they could ascertain whether anybody was inside.
“Our main concern was to ensure nobody was inside,” Corowa Fire and Rescue station commander Lindsay Bush said.
“Fortunately the caravans were unoccupied at the time.”
Shade cloth above many of the caravans helped the rapid spread of the fire which left three caravans totally destroyed and another three sites impacted by the smoke and flames.
After they had the blaze under control Mr Bush said that firefighters continued to cool damaged gas cylinders that were onsite, to prevent a potential explosion.
“Quite a few aerosol cans and electrical items exploded but we were able to extinguish and cool the LPG cylinders which took some time,” he said.
Once firefighters made sure it was safe to leave, the site was put on police watch overnight and forensics attended the scene.
The cause of the fire at Ball Park, which is set to receive a major revamp, is still unknown and currently being investigated.
All vans on site of the caravan park are due to be relocated over the next three months after Federation Council, who own the park, recently issued 90-day notices for site holders to vacate their sites ahead of the redevelopment commencing later this year.
