In a must-win game for the Flames, Moama batted throughout the whole day, with the home side eventually all out for 289.
After captain Joel Murphy fell without score, Michael Hill (23) joined opener Fraser Buchanan (70) to steady the ship before Hill was dismissed with Moama at 2-78.
The Flames looked to be building momentum after Archie Teasdale (6) was trapped in front by Tom Owen and Anthony McMahon (2) saw his bails dislodged by Brenton Sheppard, leaving Moama 4-91.
Buchanan was also bowled courtesy of Sheppard, bringing Jack Russell to the crease to join Matt Saunders.
The pair wrestled back momentum, putting on 144 for the sixth wicket and progressing the total to 264.
A huge score was on the cards before the game turned again in a dramatic Robert Salter over that resulted in three wickets in four balls, with Russell (86) the first victim.
Saunders (83) was the last man out as Moama posted 289, setting up a desperate run chase on day two for Fire Brigade.
Off the back of a competition best 8-41 last week, Salter followed up with another five wickets, posting 5-63, while Tom Owen (2-29) and Brenton Sheppard (2-63) took two scalps apiece.
The Flames must win this game if they hope to make finals, and with hopes of an outright win all but extinguished, they will need other results to go their way for first innings points to be enough to move them into the finals places.
Moama has suffered its only two losses of the season in the past two rounds and is looking for a confidence-building result ahead of finals.
The competition’s current top side is assured a finals berth, but with Echuca looking strong against Rochester and BLU rampaging through Nondies-Cohuna, allowing Fire Brigade to take this game could see the ladder leader fall as far as third.
