More than 50 women attended the 11.30am-2pm lunch fundraiser for breast cancer and ovarian cancer research, put together with an applauded combined effort from several local women associations; Intereach – Corowa Community Hub, SHE Shed, CWA and Inner Wheel.
Fay Glover from the Associated Country Women of the World and Sue O’Brien from Corowa and District SHE Shed were the guest speakers who “both spoke beautifully” according to MC Amber Murphy from Intereach.
Ms Murphy said it’s an event that they hope to keep continuing in the future and flagged the possibility of a breakfast event next year.
One feature of the function held in the Auditorium was the ‘bra art table’ put together by the SHE Shed. The table was a result of the bras left from the bra fence which was displayed on Honour Avenue during 2018. The bras were repurposed into art, where even some fascinators were made out of them.
Ms Murphy said she was extremely grateful to everyone who attended the event, the committees involved in the day’s running and the RSL Club who “have been fantastic support”.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year and is the focal point in the movement for women’s rights across the globe.
The campaign theme for this year, which the Corowa women rallied behind, is ‘#BalanceForBetter’ – a campaign theme that provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize continuous collective action.
The ultimate aim is to build a gender-balanced world.
