Police were called to the residence on Herbert Street at approximately 4.25pm last Monday and arrived within minutes to see the two bedroom unit ablaze.
CFA units from Rutherglen, Chiltern and Wahgunyah came moments later to combat the fire which they managed to have under control within 30 minutes.
Constable Darren O’Neill of Rutherglen Police was first on the scene at the block of three units and said that despite the ferocity of the blaze, no one was injured.
“The unit was on fire in the lounge room and kitchen area when police arrived,” he said.
“Luckily no one was injured.
“There’s a single male occupant who reside there who wasn’t home at the time.”
Constable O’Neill said that despite not suffering any major damage to the exterior of the house, the fire has caused approximately $100,000 worth of damages to the inside of the unit.
A crime scene was set up at the property and arson investigators were summoned from Melbourne to sweep the scene to find out what caused the fire.
Detective Senior Constable Tracy Jarrot who is heading the investigation told the media last week that police are treating the fire as suspicious and investigations are ongoing.
