Wang Hardcourt 4-63 drew Corowa Blue 5-61
Corowa Blue and Wang Hardcourt played out in a thrilling draw on Saturday with the result in doubt till the last ball was struck in anger.
Corowa Blue blasted out of the blocks early taking the first four sets to establish an early lead but as usual the Wang Hardcourt combination rallied to take four of the last five sets to ease past Corowa Blue on games. Hardcourt can consider themselves unlucky as there were five tie break sets which Corowa Blue won three by the narrowest of margins, if only Hardcourt had managed to hold their nerve in one of those tie break sets they would have taken full points. Five tie break sets indicates the closeness of the match and it was only a miss hit here or unbelievable shot there that ultimately decided the match.
Peter Filliponi and Helen Fuge were consistent for Corowa, winning three sets each while Kerrie Henderson, Lyn Sheppard, Mario Pane and Andy Lucas kept Hardcourt close throughout the day.
Wang Lawn 8-68 def Corowa Red 1-35
Wang Lawn are continuing their winning ways with another comfortable victory at the expense of Corowa Red, although Corowa were missing a couple of players which had a huge impact on the result. Lawn were impressive and with Vin “The Giant V” Warnock playing, Lawn looked a formidable combination. Vin was outstanding all day and with Shaun “Applejack” Ablazej and Carolyn “Not too” Shaw dominating play, Lawn never looked threatened. Marianne Spencer and Sheree Coghill kept the flag flying for Corowa, winning Corowa’s only set.
Section 2
Wahgunyah Red 6-58 def Myrrhee 3-53
The match of the round in Section 2 was the Myrrhee versus Wahgunyah Red clash at the Myrrhee Recreation Reserve and it lived up to expectations with the match going right down to the wire.
Wahgunyah won the first two sets in tie breaks but Myrrhee proved they will once again be a force to be reckoned with by taking three of the next four sets convincingly, setting themselves up with a six game advantage heading into the mixed sets, which they thought may be enough to hold out Wahgunyah. But Wahgunyah Red showed they won’t be far from the top echelon of Section 2 when they hit back and won the three mixed sets to eventually win six sets to three.
Myrrhee were unlucky not to be closer after losing all three tie break sets for the day which is why Myrrhee will be thereabouts come finals time. Travis “Old” McDonald was unstoppable all day for Wahgunyah Red while the youth of the team Jesse Johnstone and Ethan Palmer showed why Wahgunyah’s youth policy is working.
Cathy Van Berlo, Cath Fox and Robyn Oliver were outstanding for Myrrhee and were unfortunate not to drag Myrrhee across the line.
Wahgunyah Blue 6-66 def Corowa 3-37
Wahgunyah Blue regrouped after their demoralising loss to Wahgunyah Red last week with a resounding victory against Corowa.
Wahgunyah Blue were never troubled and the result never looked in doubt from the outset. The Wahgunyah men (John Patzyl, Glen Bobbin and Gordon Sawyer) were the difference between the two teams in this match, while Amanda Hemphill, Chris Munro and Lorraine Plunkett did their best to ensure Corowa weren’t disgraced and took the honours against the Wahgunyah women.
Everton Blue 5-62 def Boorhaman 4-52
Boorhaman started their season off brilliantly by winning the first two sets but then appeared to lose their way as they lost the next four sets and fell behind by 11 games heading into the mixed sets.
After winning the first two mixed sets there was a glimmer of hope but Everton Blue’s experienced duo of Graeme Gibb and Leanne Wood snuffed that out quickly and rounded out their days with three sets each. Shirley Fuller, Merryn Byrne and Kevin Hill were Boorhamans best.
Rutherglen 5-47 def Wang Hardcourt 4-44
In an amazing turn of events at the Wang Hardcourt complex Rutherglen overcame the dogged Hardcourt team by a slender margin. After lending Rutherglen a player, Nicole Brimblecombe, she put the final nail in the Hardcourt coffin by winning her mixed set. The match ebbed and flowed all day, as all the sets were one sided results until the mixed sets which ensured the match would go the distance.
Rutherglen had none better than Paul Blackshaw with Brady Hofer and Pete Smith also dominating, while Tomo Moriya, Kath Trainer and Marianna Hines kept Hardcourt within striking distance all day.
Section 3
Wahgunyah Blue 6-48 def WahgunyahUnited 0-10
Wahgunyah Blue (Jake Saville, Tye Callow, Corey Hill, Matt Vogel) are continuing their winning ways with a whitewash of the unfortunate Wahgunyah United (Liam Hill, Rob Hill, Matt Davis, Hayley Hill) who lost their number one player at 1.30. This threw all Rob’s plans into disarray from which they never recovered.
Wahgunyah Red 6-48 def Wooragee 0-16
Wahgunyah Red (Peter Treberly, Wayne Johnstone, Kane Palmer, Andrew Palmer) also had a comfortable victory over the competitive Wooragee (Liam Ladbrook, Daniel Ladbrook, Annika Knoth, Ebony Boote).
