Corowa Rutherglen 5.9-39def by Myrtleford 14.13-97
The much improved Myrtleford Saints maintained their unbeaten record against an injury-ravaged Corowa Rutherglen outfit on Saturday.
Jamie Seymour and Darcy Melksham were unavailable for selection, the situation further exacerbated by the early loss of Hayden Filliponi and Gus Lingham later in the game.
It’s hoped that the interleague bye will see the return of a number of players the following week in their home ground clash against Lavington.
Into the side came recruit Cameron Dunne for his first senior game for the club who was accompanied by the return of Leigh Schulz and Kaelen Bradtke for his first senior appearance in 2019.
Alex Wallis played some really good footy and was the focal point up forward with three majors.
Leigh Schulz attacked the ball in his customary manner and was the other main goal scorer with two majors to his name.
Billy Raggett played a strong defensive game against one of the league’s best tall forwards while Dean Druce and Jarrod Lane were both strong in the ruck.
Tyson Logie, Shane Tregear and Jack Schilg performed well in the midfield, but it was the constant forward pressure from the opposition, combined with a compromised bench that took its toll in the end.
Too many skill errors did not help with keeping the final score closer as Myrtleford were handed a number of cheap scoring opportunities.
Something to work on over the break.
Goals: A. Wallis 3, L. Schulz 2
Awards: B. Raggett, D. Druce, J. Schilg, T. Logie, J. Lane.
Reserves
Corowa Rutherglen 5.2-31def by Myrtleford 10.13-73
Scott Montgomery’s goal in first minute of play, Joe Ferguson’s hard hits in defence and the running play of Beau Schilg and Harley Ralph provided an entertaining opening to the Reserves match.
Although the backline from there on were under constant pressure, the likes of John Conroy, Luke Kuschert stood strong repelling many a forward thrust from the Saints.
Cody Kuschert was leading by example while Third’s players in Cal and Blake Spencer were good contributors, despite doubling up for the day.
The Roos were still in the race in the third quarter with Montgomery adding to his tally of three, and when Alex Finlayson goaled the crowd sensed and air of excitement.
Simon Lavis, a consistent contributor also put in a strong performance.
The team played some of its best team footy for the season which was enjoyed by Jayden Hall making his first appearance for the season.
Goals: S. Montgomery 3, A. Finlayson, C. Kuschert
Awards: S. Lavis, L. Kuschert, J. Conroy, J. Ferguson, A. Finlayson
