Corowa’s quiet achiever

Combined NSW High Schools three-day golf championships were held at Yamba Golf Club between 24th and 26th June.

Corowa High School student, Amanda Hemphill qualified to participate as a Riverina team member.

Very familiar with Corowa’s golf course however, Yamba was a different experience. Initially the 1,200-kilometre trip to get to Yamba for golf was very different compared to the five-minute drive to her local course.

Wet conditions on day one dampened everyone’s spirits. Sunshine on days two and three created the perfect coastal golfing conditions. Lush green fairways and tricky greens offered a challenge for the young golfers. Experience on Corowa’s greens and a student of head professional, Rob Rowe’s junior development program, boosted Amanda’s confidence.

She was delighted with the opportunity to meet and play with young golfers from across NSW. Locally, few girls choose golf as their sport. Playing in a field of young golfers is a rare opportunity for Amanda. She has definitely decided to continue playing and improving her golf skills as a result of a very rewarding State Championship experience.

What is next for Amanda? Plenty of golf during the school holidays. Happy in the winner’s circle again. Top of the leader board in women’s par competition with a credible +2. Corowa’s September golf development camp and later in the year club Championships are certainly on Amanda’s radar. Membership of Riverina’s Combined High School golf team is definitely on her 2020 golfing calendar.
