Battle to save building lost

Although not used in recent times, the fight to save the building for new uses and great memories was increased with 76 submissions in support of its retention to Federation Council the week before last.

But although local resident Heather Kerr delivered an emotional address to council just prior to the start of council’s monthly meeting on October 22, councillors did not take further action despite Cr  Gail Law still wanting to see the building’s retention and Cr Bronwyn Thomas also preferring the building remain.

As detailed in the Free Press on September 25, councillors voted overwhelmingly to have the building demolished. Demolition work began on October 23 with removal of asbestos-cladded walls.

A small monument and plaque to commemorate the site as the original home of the Oaklands RSL will be erected in due course.
