Iconic Australian retailer, Dimmeys has announced it will be closing its doors, which will include its Sanger Street store.
The discount retailer announced the news in a Facebook post last Tuesday after 166 years of trading.
“After 166 years one of Australia’s oldest retailers is closing down,” the post said. “All stock in store MUST GO! Excludes already marked down items. Sale starts Wednesday 20th November 2019.”
Staff at the Corowa store confirmed to The Free Press that they were notified last Monday that their store wouldn’t be spared.
They also said they weren’t yet given a definitive closing date but thought it would likely close “before Christmas”.
Dimmeys, which specialises in discount and “no frills” merchandise, has 31 stores across Australia, many of which are located in regional towns.
The franchise collapsed in 2014 following a series of product safety breaches and was sold to Cool Breeze Clothing.
Dimmeys was first established in 1853 and the company believes it is “the oldest ongoing retail company in Australia,” according to their website.
The Corowa store currently has a 30 per cent off closing down sale storewide.
