“Food was left cooking in the oven while the female was asleep in a back bedroom,” Fire & Rescue NSW 268 Corowa Station Commander Lindsay Bush told The Free Press.
“Upon inspection, the unit was full of smoke. We tried to alert the occupants and gain entry. A startled occupant emerged and explained to us that they had been cooking dinner and had fallen asleep.
“After the unit was vented and rendered safe the occupant returned back to her home with a valuable lesson - keep looking while cooking!
“This could have ended very differently. Luckily they had working smoke alarms and a concerned neighbour.”
Commander Bush said it illustrated the significance of homes having smoke alarms. He re-iterated a warning to people: “If you are cooking, make sure you’re awake at all times and don’t get complacent.”
It was one of four call-outs attended to by Fire & Rescue NSW 268 Corowa Station last week.
At about 6.00pm on Monday, May 18, a fire occurred in a small shed behind at the rear of a Sanger Street Corowa business resulting in the loss of an estimated $15,000 worth of tools.
“It was an electrical issue which started the fire,” Fire & Rescue NSW 268 Corowa Station Deputy Captain Wayne Schulz said, “possibly from the fridge.
“The fire burnt all the tools but the single brick shed was largely saved.”
A grass fire in Neil Street South Corowa was attended to at about 6.00pm on Tuesday, May 19. A small area in a tree lot was burnt. No homes were close by.
Another call-out was to assist the local Ambulance crew.
