The slab has been poured for the expected five-month long construction of the $982,164 Urana Aquatic Centre – Leisure Centre and Jetty project.

Located on the bank of Lake Urana, the project will include a functions room for up to 100 people, a gymnasium, meeting room, commercial grade kitchen, deck, jetty, toilet facilities, storage/cleaner facilities, carparking areas and landscaping.
But councillors of Federation Council are mystified as to its name, especially the word ‘aquatic’ and would welcome any community feedback about their opinion as to the most appropriate name.
The subject arose following a report on progress of major projects by council’s director engineering services Steve Carmichael at council’s monthly on-line meeting on June 23.
Deputy Mayor Shaun Whitechurch said the name had been raised with him on numerous occasions, asking why the name ‘aquatic’ was used. “Is it too late to change the name?” he asked.
Mayor Pat Bourke supported his deputy’s sentiments. “I totally agree. I don’t know why it was called ‘aquatic centre’,” the mayor answered.
Mayor Bourke said the project was originally referred to as ‘public works’ during the grant process application/discussion but added the project does not include a swimming pool. “It’s certainly different from an aquatic centre,” he said.
