That’s what the managing director of Hines Constructions Bathurst David Hines told The Free Press last Thursday.
“It’s a great project to be involved in,” he said. “We love building big projects in small towns.
“Being small really makes the community appreciate the facility – they get ‘involved’.”
Corowa’s overall $10.3 million project is one of the biggest projects undertaken by Hines Constructions.
“It’s up there but Gunnedah’s $12 million Memorial Swimming Pool and Wellington’s $9 million Aquatic Leisure Centre were bigger projects,” Mr Hines said.
Corowa Swimming Club Life Member Maryann Herbert has been on three pool committees over the years and was so actively involved in collecting thousands of signatures for a heated indoor pool.
“It’s taken a long time but it’s the best result we could have achieved,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic move - three lanes of 25 metres – and Corowa’s really going ahead. Council has done a great job.”
Brad Moore agreed. “It’s absolutely fantastic, catering for a wide cross representation of people – young mothers, fathers, everyone - with the splash pool, outdoor pool and indoor pool.”
Former record serving mayor of Corowa Shire Council, star swimmer of yesteryear and Corowa Swimming Club Life Member Gary Poidevin was aged five years when the Corowa Swimming Pool was built in 1956.
“I feel the new aquatic centre meets all the needs of all the community,” the Ovens and Murray 100m freestyle champion swimmer during his 16-to 20-years-of-age said.
“It will be great to see the opening of the complex (completion due March/April) which I believe will suit everyone in the community.
“People who showed concern at what might have been should now be very satisfied.
“I congratulate the Federation Council for going ahead and doing it.”
