The space will be transformed into a vibrant area with lighting, street furniture, Wi-Fi, art, outdoor dining tables and a performance area.
The upgrade has come about after Federation Council secured a $97,000 Streets as Shared Spaces grant from the NSW Government in August.
In conjunction with Federation Youth Council, the space will be transformed into a youth friendly space, the whole community can enjoy.
The virtual plans reveal café style seating at the Sanger Street end, a community notice board upgrade and the addition of a mural wall, lighting upgrade and roof improvements. The update will continue through the plaza with updated seating and furniture, a drinking fountain, upgraded bins and lighting.
Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said the youth council have been planning a space that is inclusive, youth friendly and can be used for all types of community events in Corowa.
“The space concept and design has been developed by Stephen Richmond in consultation with the Federation Youth Council,” Mayor Bourke said.
“This project will transform the plaza space into an inclusive, vibrant and community friendly youth space.
“The Memorial Plaza upgrade was selected as one of 27 regional Council’s and 14 Councils in Greater Sydney to deliver a total of 48 successful projects, temporary street transformations, cycle ways, pop up parks and rejuvenated public spaces.”
Artist Kade Sarte has been engaged to complete the mural work on the internal plaza wall that will follow the local and Australian native animal theme with some interactive pieces included around the doorway openings.
Federation Youth Council Mayor Maxim Blockley said the upgrades are an important milestone for the Federation Youth Council.
“We are excited to start using this space for the multitude of community events we have been planning,” he said.
The project works are expected to commence during November 2020 and completed at the start of 2021.
