The storyteller and published author had much to do with Federation Council and Mayor Pat Bourke said it was with much sadness he heard of the man popularly known as ‘Uncle Freddie passing away.
“He was a great mentor to the Bangerang people,” Mayor Bourke said. “Uncle Freddie worked with Federation Council on a number of occasions, had various educational trips and we all have fond memories.
“I suggest we write a letter and send a sympathy card to his family.”
Cr Bronwyn Thomas marvelled at the “legacy Uncle Freddie leaves us”. “How exciting it was when he was here in the chamber about two years ago and diligently went through with us all the local maps and left the maps with us so the history can be in our hands.
“It was so humbling to be part of that. And as the author of children’s books – what a gift a child could have.”
Cr Thomas suggested the books written by Uncle Freddie be laid out in council’s libraries for our children’s benefit.
Federation Council’s General Manager Adrian Butler said Member for Albury Justin Clancy has spoken with family members in Jerilderie since Uncle Freddy’s passing.
“Justin was keen to see whatever recognition we can do in respect of Uncle Freddy and Rodney will talk to his brothers about it,” Mr Butler said.
“His son Rodney did the Welcome to Country on our Australia Day in Urana in January and did such a good job even though it must have been hard for him.”
Mr Clancy will talk further with the family about going forward with Federation Council matters and “see where that takes us” the General Manager said.
