The opposition won the toss and elected to bat. Things started well for Corowa with an early wicket before a 25 run partnership by Barny/Chiltern steadied for a moment. Enter Mark Athanitis who showed why he is one of the most skilful bowlers in the competition with his changes of pace, destroying the opposition with figures of 5 for 10 off 6 overs. Nathan Rhodes also had two late wickets to finish with 2 for 3 off 4 overs and leaving Barnawartha/Chiltern all out for 54.Corowa’s run chase never looked in doubt with the two openers looking very positive and keen to get the runs in a hurry. Opener Matt Grantham (11) was the only batter dismissed being stumped trying to keep the runs flowing. Other opener Kodee Lowe was the leader of the chase, ending 30 not out and Jordan Eyers 10 not out ending the innings after just 10 overs. Next week A grade are once again at home against Kiewa. The old rooms are due to be demolished this week, but the bar will be open still so get down and support the boys in what hopes to be some warmer weather.
B Grade
B Grade had the bye. This week they take on Kiewa at Kiewa.
C Grade Div 1
C Grade hosted Wodonga White on the weekend. Young guns Caleb Kuschert and Patty Blain were first to bowl and although they were unable to break the opening partnership, Blain especially bowled a beautiful opening spell. The first bowling change brought a tired looking Zeke McMillan into the attack and a brilliant catch highlighted by some sleek movement in the field by the fleet footed Closter made the breakthrough. But it was Liam Andrews who stole the show for the visitors, smacking a run-a-ball 94* and showcasing some brutal striking towards the end of the innings. McMillan picking up 2/16.
With an imposing 180 runs set, Kuschert was promoted up the order with a license to attack. His fourth ball bounced in the parking lot for a massive six and the chase was on.
At drinks the innings was sitting at 1/63, guided beautifully by the experienced Jason Raggett who was finessing the leather around Morris Park with ease. When he fell for 36, the score at 3/98, the batting demons of the first three games came back to haunt Corowa, losing the remaining 7 wickets for 30 runs to go down by a disappointing 52 runs.
Next week the boys will be at home to take on New City in an attempt to get back on the winners list. Be sure to get down for the most entertaining c grade cricket in the area.
C Grade Div 2
C Grade Div 2 were unable to get a side for the game and had to forfeit.
Under 16s
Under 16s didn’t get a start in their run chase against Lavington with the weather causing the game to be called off. The side take on New City/Albury this Friday night at Ball Park.
Girls Under 15s
The Girls took on Belvoir at Morris Park for the first home game of the season and a re-match of last year’s grand final.
Belvoir won the toss and sent the girls in. Clodagh and Anika opened the batting and showed great speed between the wickets. The runs continued to flow with Steph, Lydia and Bree also making solid contributions, setting the home side up for a total score of 3/124.The girls continued to go from strength to strength in the field against last year’s premiers with some strong bowling displayed, restricting Belvoir to 70 runs. The wickets were shared around with Steph, Lydia, Ava and Tayah all taking 2 wickets each and youngster Bree Forrest showing strong form in the field with 2 run outs. The girls have the bye this week and will be back at Morris Park the following week. Special thanks to Simon Ginns for popping down and taking some awesome photos.
Under 14s Blue
After posting 187 the previous week, Corowa blue turned up ready to defend their total. Izzy bush and Blake Keenes opened the bowling and were on fire early, dismissing the Albury top order cheaply – at one stage having them 5/40.
Albury then decided to bat the overs out and defend leaving them 6/90 after their 40 overs. It was a great bowling effort all round with Izzy the standout and great contributions from Taj Smith, Blake, Judd Kuschert and Rosie Blain. Mick Hughes got the painters cafe award after putting his hand up to be the non-bowler for the game.
Under 14s White
The run chase began well with only 290 to get for Corowa White.
Openers Jay Lavis and Ollie Collins combined to put on 20 before Jay was bowled out for 10.
John Biddle was next to have a crack, making a solid 5 but hanging around for another 20 run partnership with Ollie. Jackson Bolger then took his spot and went on the attack with a quick fire 9 before he came back to sit with his teammates in the outer. This brought Ethan Lane in and he and Collins showed the way with a 30 run partnership before Lane was bowled out for a very good 15 runs and provided the team with the best partnership of the day.
Brodie Eyers took guard and tied up one end making sure Corowa would bat the 40 overs, resulting in a solid effort for 12 not out. Ollie Collins top scored for the team with 24 but was out soon after. Issac Dickinson briefly looked dangerous for his 7 before he missed a straight one and then number 8, Tyler Abley, entered the fray fresh off his best score from a Friday night under 12s game. Tyler was in good form but missed a straight one and was out for 3.
Hamish Baker would almost play one of the best shots of the innings, unluckily to be caught low down in the covers for a quacker. Harry Ireland was next at bat, he decided to attack but only lasted 2 balls and decided to have duck for tea with Hamish. Josh Bruce, 2 not out, was able to hang around with Brodie and see the day out and finish 9/119 – the best score for the season.
Under 12s Blue
Corowa Blue faced Wodonga Raiders at Noreil Park under the threat of gloomy skies. Captain Daniel won the toss and chose to bat, hoping to make quick runs before the heavens opened. Openers Leroy and Daniel strode to the crease and quickly set about making a big score until a mix up in the 6th over which saw Daniel run out on 11 runs. Next in was Jarvis who quickly set about building a partnership with Leroy when the heavens opened in the 10th over blanketing the ground with heavy rain causing the game to be a draw which left Leroy 15no and Jarvis 4 no.
Next week we play Lavington Teal at home.
Under 12s White
Corowa White hosted Howlong in miserable conditions. Winning the toss and batting, openers Joe Lavis and Tex Longmire ticked the score over with great running between the wickets. Some good bowling had the boys concentrating before Tex went at 42 for a well-made 17. Joe retired for a very good 26 before a few wickets went but all the while the score ticked over. Levi Phibbs and Archie Bedford joined together in a stand that their fathers couldn’t have put together. Smart running from the two 10-year old’s got the team to 122 from 21 overs. A great effort by all batsmen.Howlong came out all guns blazing as they hit constantly to leg. A couple of dropped catches had things evenly poised but some great bowling from Rustyn Collins, Clodagh Blain and Toby Hanrahan halted the spiders. All 12 players can bowl, and it showed. A great win for the young team.
