The first regatta was the School Sports Victoria regatta featuring public schools from Victoria and Corowa High School students.
The first event was the Year 9 single with 3 Corowa members Bella Heagney (Xavier High) and Corowa High students Clancy Tomlinson and Sommers Hogan.
Sommers was up first having a tight battle down the course finishing in 3rd place and a place in the B final.
Bella and Clancy lined up in the next heat with a close race down the course.
Bella held off a fast finishing Clancy to see both move into the A final.
Sommers improved on her heat row to claim 2nd place in the B final.
The A final was a great race with little separating the 4 scullers at the 500m mark.
The Essendon sculler made her move as Clancy and Bella battled for 2nd and 3rd place.
Clancy has been improving with each race and in a close refinish held off Bella to claim 2nd place.
Corowa High students Lachie Hogan and Marcus Maclean proved too good in the year 9 double scull to claim the win.
Rutherglen High student Emily Price scored a great heat win to move into the final.
With a full field Emily lifted in the final to run away with a great win.
Rutherglen High also took out the Male year 8 single with Spencer Holland continuing his great season to take the win from Doubles partner and Corowa High student Brodie Julian who claimed 2nd place.
Corowa High year 9 double featured Clancy and Sommers who improved with each row to win the heat and take out the final.
Rutherglen High students Emily and Taylah Storer competed in the year 10 double with their first race together.
The girls had a great row to win the heat and race in the A final where the girls came second.
The year 10 scullers were up next with Liam Fitzgerald finishing third in his heat and determined to improve in the B final went on to take the win.
The year 10 single featured Taylah (RHS) and Bella (Xavier HS).
Taylah had a great row in the heat to finish 2nd and in the B final rowed down the girl to claim 2nd place.
Bella won her heat and in a close race down the course in the final finished in 3rd place getting great race preparation for the HOSG regatta beginning Friday.
The last race featured Liam and Brodie from Corowa H.S in the year 10 double.
The crew won their heat and improving in the final with a quicker time taking out the win.
A great regatta by all students and parents thanks for all the help as we prepare for the Head of the School Girls regatta on Friday.
The largest schoolgirl regatta in the Southern Hemisphere got underway with Emily Tidd representing Galen College in the year 10 single.
After an even start Emily made her move and in a strong display took the lead for a comfortable win.
The next crew was the Rutherglen High School year 10 double scull of Emily Price year 8 and Taylah Storer.
The new crew had been working hard at training and were ready for a battle against the current Under 17 state Champions.
Emily and Taylah’s instructions were to row their own race and get to the finish line as quick as they could.
With 4 crews lining up Emily and Taylah were in for a battle sitting in 3rd place.
The girls had a great row, following instructions and recording a fantastic time.
The year 9 girls were up next with the largest field of 31 entries.
Corowa had Bella Heagney represented Xavier High and Clancy Tomlinson and Sommers Hogan representing Corowa High.
Clancy was first up and her State Championship form showed she was performing at her best at the right time of the season.
After a cautious start Clancy found her rhythm to take control of the race to lead all the way for the win.
Year 7 student Sommers was up next, never afraid of a challenge.
She had a great row over the 1000m course to improve on her time from Thursday’s regatta to finish 4th.
Bella was on the course competing in the year 9 single scull for the 3rd time at this regatta and showed her class and experience to lead all the way for the win.
With Friday’s heats coming to an end and large crowds of over 10,000 expected over the weekend it was unfortunate but due to the Coronavirus, the regatta was cancelled due to safety concerns for the students.
What can be taken away from Friday’s results, was Emily Tidd was 2nd fastest in her heat, Emily and Taylah’s heat row would have put them in a top 8 position, Clancy and Bella recorded the two fastest times and Sommers time would see her in the top half of the field.
Thanks to all the parents and rowers for the efforts preparing for this regatta although disappointing Corowa showed they are up with the best rowing schools across the State.
Due to the virus concerns all Rowing regattas have been cancelled so this is the last regatta for the season.
Presentation night is on Saturday, March 28. Names on the board to celebrate a great season.
As the rowers begin their winter sports, now is the time to come down and check out the facilities at the rowing club to see what’s on offer.
