“We also hope to implement a hockey program for our juniors when restrictions ease,” acting club president Matthew Davis told The Free Press.
Mr Davis was speaking after the decision was made on Tuesday night last week by Hockey Albury Wodonga (HAW) to cancel season 2020.
“A meeting was held with all the club presidents and the Hockey Albury Wodonga board on Tuesday night and it was decided that the 2020 season is cancelled,” he said.
“Our club committee made the tough decision that due to the uncertainty with the border closures that we would not be able to enter the 2020 season.
“We are disappointed that the hockey season will not be going ahead. Our members have been very patient and it would have been nice to get back on the field but we agree this is the right move.”
All club training was cancelled immediately the decision was made by both the Victorian and NSW State Premiers that the border was to close at 11.59 pm that night.
Corowa Rutherglen United Hockey Club thanks everyone for their effort with training and trying to get things going at its club level, as well as the HAW Board and clubs for everything they have done in their attempts to hold a competition season during this coronavirus pandemic.
“The announcement came as a bit of a shock,” Mr Davis said. “For us living on the border, there are more important things we need to sort out than playing hockey at the moment, and for a lot of us, that’s saying something.”
The acting president’s message is: “Please all ensure you stay healthy, practise good hygiene and social distancing, and respect one another. There are many other ways that we can all stay connected and also do some exercise, we just need to broaden our minds.”
