A solemn Anzac service was held prior to the start of the game before the action began.
Despite preparing for a big challenge, the Roos were shell-shocked early in the game as Wangaratta scored four straight goals to take early control of the game.
The Roos settled to score three goals later in the quarter to even up the contest. At quarter time the Magpies led by 18 points.
The second quarter was owned by the Magpies who scored six goals to the Roos one. Jy Lane and Jarred Lane were busy through the middle of the ground, but the speed and clean ball use of the opposition were having an impact. The Magpies took a 51-point lead into half time.
After half time the Magpies continued to take control of the game. Despite the efforts of Jack Schilg and Kade Kuschert in defence, the delivery to the Wangaratta forwards was proving difficult to defend.
The Roo midfielders, led by Cameron Wilson, were battling hard but finding the task difficult. Up forward, Hayden Filliponi and Charlie Nastasi were busy on occasions and managed to finish with goals.
As the game progressed the Magpies continued to dominate the contest with their ball movement and finishing work up forward. The Magpies ran away to win by a big margin.
Best players- Jy Lane, Jack Schilg, Kade Kuschert, Charlie Nastasi, Jarred Lane and Cameron Wilson. Leading goalkicker was Charlie Nastasi with 3 goals.
Reserves
Corowa Rutherglen seconds again faced the challenge of getting sufficient numbers for the game. As a result, a number of thirds players lined up to play another game.
It was also encouraging for the club to see Tom Goodwin line up for his first game of the season.
He appeared to get through the game successfully. Unfortunately, the seconds boys were no match for a strong Magpies outfit.
The Magpies ran out comfortable winners.
Award winners- Corowa Whisky and Chocolate Factory – Luke Backhouse, Aussie Hotel – Nick Clifton, Sodens Hotel – Ben Ferraro, Club Award – Will Seymour and Jamie Seymour Ricky D’s – Ethan Hanrahan.
Powerhouse Tom Goodwin was a welcome addition to the Roos Reserves following his injury which meant a late start to the season.
Under 18s
With a reduced squad and only one person on the interchange, it was important to get off to a good start and that's exactly what the thirds did last Saturday against the Magpies.
The Roos went goal for goal with the Magpies for the first half. Riley Allen, Jay Compton and Jesse Johnstone all active early, offering great support to our big forwards.
The hot conditions and a depleted bench proved to be a telling factor in the second half, but the Roos never stopped trying, with Ethan Hanrahan and Ned Taylor continuing to play well for the Roos.
With the benefit of a full bench and fresh legs, the home side gradually getting away to a very handy four goal lead by three quarter time.
The last quarter was very similar, with the home team piling on another five goals to the Roos one goal.
Will Robinson contesting the ruck.
The most positive thing to take away from the game, was the way the boy's kept working hard all day under very trying conditions and with a full squad next time they meet the Magpies, the Roos are definitely capable changing the end result.
Final Score- Wangaratta 14-11-5 to Corowa/Rutherglen 6-5-41
Goals- Ryan Beveridge 4, Finn Osborne, Ethan Hanrahan 1
This Saturday, April 30, Corowa Rutherglen play Wodonga Raiders at John Foord Oval. The club would love to see a great crowd help get the footballers back on the winners list and cheer the netballers as they continue their good work on the netball court.
