14,000 lambs were yarded for a decrease of 2,312 while sheep were up 2,074 with 9,000 yarded at this week’s market.
Numbers eased with agents still penning strong numbers of excellent new season lambs finished on crops. The quality was mixed across all weights and grades with some very good heavy sheep available. The lamb market regained some momentum this week after last week’s softening in prices. All the regular field of buyers were present with some extra feedlot and restocker competition today across the light lambs and light trade weights.
The quality of new season lambs was mostly fresh with the occasional pen looking a little dry in the skin. Trade weight lambs gained $2 to $5 with the light and medium trade lambs 18kg to 22kg selling between $150 and $182 and the heavy trade making between $171 and $198/head to average 782c/kg cwt. Domestic and export processors were keen to fill orders on some excellent fresh lambs offered with prices lifting $2 in the heavy lamb category selling between $190 and $212/head. Export buyers were also active in the market with prices lifting up to $11 for the 26kg to 30kg lambs making between 210c and 234c, averaging 764c/kg cwt. The over 30kg lambs made up to $250/head.
Light lambs to the processor were well supplied and the added competition from restockers and feedlots resulted in prices up to $6/head stronger. Light lambs made from $128 to $144/head.
A large portion of the light and light and medium trade lambs were taken by restockers and feedlot buyers with the 18kg to 22kg lambs making between $148 and $190 selling in a softer market and the light lambs made between $127 and $155/head.
A very good selection of heavy and trade weight mutton was available with buyers all keen to participate on the good quality offered, however prices were softer over all weights and grades. Well finished heavy 4 score crossbred ewes made between $146 to $202/head to average 570c/kg cwt. The Merino 4 score ewes reached $181 and the 2 and 3 score ewes sold between $144 and $181/head.
