This is the sixth year the challenge has been held in Rutherglen.
The winner of the coveted Green Dragon (1st prize) was Merilyn Hammond of Corowa, 2nd Sally Dowling of Rutherglen and 3rd Anne Taylor of Howlong.
As part of her Green Dragon win, Merilyn now has to compose her own unique hand which will be added to the other 65 Mah Jong hands that are played.
Mah Jong was created in China a few hundred years ago and introduced into the English Clubs of Shanghai and it quickly spread across the western world. Since then the game has evolved with many variations.
The game is made up of 144 tiles with various symbols. It looks complicated to play but is actually not a difficult game to learn.
The game played by the Rutherglen Mah Jong group is based on the Max Robertson rules.
The convenor of the Rutherglen Mah Jong group Bev Reichman said the level of skill shown by the players is of a high standard and their enthusiasm for the game is infectious.

The Rutherglen Mah Jong group meet every Monday at 1pm at the Star Hotel, Rutherglen, 12.30pm if you would like to have lunch prior to the game commencing.
New members are welcome and prior experience isn’t necessary as lessons are available for beginners.
