Lawn White had an enthralling battle with Wang Hardcourt on Saturday as the teams traded sets for most of the day. Lawn’s women held an advantage over their counterpart while the Hardcourt men dominated the Lawn men to set up a three-game lead heading into the mixed sets.
When Sean Ablazej and Janelle Hartwig (three sets) and Paul Hogan and Wendy Hogan (three sets) won they had put the result in Lawn’s favour and beyond doubt. Hardcourt’s Matt Lucas (three sets) and Denise Goodwin put some respectability to the score line, winning comfortably and reducing the margin to three games in the finish.
Lawn’s Hartwig and Hogan were ably supported by Carolyn Shaw. Scott Solimo and Mario Pane ensured Matt Lucas didn’t play a lone hand for Hardcourt.
Lawn Blue gained another six points with a win against Corowa at Ball Park. Lawn were looking comfortable early however Corowa won two sets in a row to put the pressure back on them. They responded to take the next 2 sets and give themselves an eight-game advantage with the mixed sets to play.
Peter Filliponi and Marianne Spencer dominated their opponents to win easily and once again the pressure was on the Lawn team as the scores levelled up. Lawn weren’t daunted by the pressure and responded by winning the two remaining sets to run out victors by seven games.
Lawn’s Robert Voss (three sets), Ken Parker, Kim Brown & Susie Bennett set up their win while Corowa’s Marianne Spencer (three sets), Peter Filliponi and Matt “Cedar” Forrest ensured the encounter was close.
Section 2
The 7-2 score line doesn’t reflect the evenness of the match between Everton Red and Wang Hardcourts and once again you can’t trust the score line to paint a true picture. Everton Red won all four of the tie break sets. If Hardcourt had a little luck and a small amount of composure in the tight situations, they may have gained wins in three of the sets and to change the score line. But good teams manage to win the tight ones and that was the case with Everton. They are an experienced team that can absorb pressure and laugh in the face of adversity. Hardcourt had winners in Kath Trainor, Maria Pulvirenti, Marianna Hines and Curtis Hines and for the winners Noel Kneebone, Rob Findlay and Alan Wood provided the experience for Everton Red.
Rutherglen returned to the winners list at the expense of Wahgunyah Blue on Saturday. Rutherglen opened up a 3-1 lead. Wahgunyah hit back taking the next two sets to ensure the match would go to the wire with the mixed sets to play. Rutherglen held their nerve and won two of the three sets to record a 5-4 and six game victory. Rutherglen’s Helen Fuge (three sets), Josh Quick and Brady Hofer were impressive and Wahgunyah’s Tong Jones (three sets), Lauren Morrison and Mitch Parker continued their good form. Wahgunyah Red were far from convincing on Saturday against Everton Blue and managed to scrape across the line after they jumped to an early.
Everton Blue slowly but surely dragged themselves back into the match and when they won the first two mixed sets. They were primed for an upset victory but Wahgunyah’s young guns Ethan Palmer and Max Harvey showed nerves of steel to lead their team to a win with an impressive display. Ethan (three sets), Max and Jesse Johnstone lead the way for Wahgunyah and Everton’s Eleisha Kneebone, Coralie Saunders and Jenny Cooper
ensured the match was close.
Myrrhee flexed their muscles against Boorhaman and dominated the match from start to finish at no stage did Myrrhee look in danger of losing. Unfortunately for Boorhaman
they were missing a number of their stars which would have ensured a closer match if they were available. For the winners Rob Seymour, Jane McGuiness and Phil Corker were untouchable and Boorhaman’s Dale Robinson, Shirley Fuller, Merryn Byrne and Emily Keys battled against the odds.
Section 3
Wahgunyah Red (Peter Treberly, Andrew Palmer, Kane Palmer, Ollie Strove) continued their impressive form with a faultless display against Chiltern White (Maree Murphy, Bridie Murphy, Amy Ziebarth, Sarah Birthisel).
Wahgunyah Black (Priscilla Hill, Mat Vogel, Brody Molnar, Corey Hill) have found some consistent form against a raidily improving Woooragee (Skip Peiper, Daniel Ladbroke, William Elhave, Ebony Boote) team.
Wahgunyah United (Rob Hill, David Strachan, Matt Davis, Kellie Storer) were too strong for Chiltern Red (Amelia Beattie, Grace Birtisel, Molly Williams, Emma Williams).
