Murray Felines 9-11-65 def Alpine Lions 2-2- 4
The under 16s Felines played against Whorouly’s Alpine Lions at Corowa’s John Foord Oval in perfect sunny conditions. It was always going to be a good contest as the two most dominant teams from last season’s U16s went head to head.
Through a very balanced contribution from the whole team, the Felines had another great win. It was another selfless display as the group showed that playing together as a collective unit is always key to on-field success.
The midfield brigade continued to step up and improve. Yasmine Budic was unstoppable from the pivot and played her best game for the Felines to date.
Brooke Davies was a revelation running off the half back line, and Emily Keys once again played a captains role, including a blind turn out of the pack, two bounces and a kick deep into our forward line. Mietta Habets and Caitlin Somerville both had good days and provided a lot of drive in the packs and on outside.
Up forward, Sophie continues to provide a target and compete, while the competition has been put on notice to not get between Mackenzie and the goals when she has the ball in her hands.
The team was well served by many of the younger players who continue to improve and shine. What a great bunch of girls who make up the Murray Felines Youth girls team. We are very proud of you all.
A very warm day for football greeted the Felines Open Women’s side. With a few injuries and unavailabilities we had three players debut for us today.
A huge thank you to Emily Kirkwood, Macey Gillman and Sophie Nicholson for playing today. Sophie, backing up after a full game in the Under 16s, acquitted herself well.
The game was very exciting and the team played their best match for the season. Kaitlyn Robinson and Tahlia Simpson were strong in the backline and there was an even contribution from all the players.
Brit Kungl continued to provide an option in the midfield and Lillian Walton also proved that she can match it in the midfield when she had her chance to move up the ground.
In a very even game with only 10 points the difference midway through the last quarter, Alpine kicked 3 late goals to run out 28 point winners. The Felines had many opportunities to score but were not able to take full toll on their forward entries.
Goal: Sophie Nicholson – 1
Best Players: Kaitlyn Robinson, Tahlia Simpson, Lillian Walton, Matilda Overend, Brit Kungl and Kristen Holmes.
Special thanks to all of the volunteers on game day. The club is lucky to have fantastic families on board again this year. Whether you baked a cake, worked the scoreboard, took photos, helped in the canteen, ran water, were team trainer, field umpire, coach or helped out in any other way, you are greatly appreciated. A big thank you also to the Corowa Rutherglen Football and Netball Club for hosting the gilrs at John Foord Oval.
The Felines have a bye over the Easter weekend before taking on the Wangaratta Rovers at Wangaratta the week after. As always, the Felines can be followed on Facebook and train every Wednesday night at Barkly Park, Rutherglen. All new players welcome.
