The 45-year-old actor has argued that the AI debate is much more nuanced than many people are willing to acknowledge.
Asked about his biggest AI-related fear, Gordon-Levitt told The New York Times newspaper: "I would object to that question just because reducing these concerns into one sound bite of fear - that's one of the problems."
Gordon-Levitt explained that AI could create wide-ranging issues, some of which are more subtle than others.
He said: "To me, saying: oh, I'm scared that AI could exterminate all of humanity - that doesn't really get at the substance of the concern. There's real validity to that concern. But that's not the thing that really worries me."
Gordon-Levitt specifically expressed concerns about the people building AI models.
The actor explained: "These companies are betting on the notion that they're going to take over the entire economy. That would be totalitarianism, and that would be really bad.
"Simultaneously, these models are being trained to hijack your intimacy, to make friends with you, to get you to fall in love with it. We shouldn't be scared of an AI. We should be concerned about the people building AI."
Meanwhile, Ben Affleck recently shared his thoughts about AI.
The 54-year-old filmmaker explained how he intends to use the cutting-edge technology moving forwards.
The actor-turned-director - who recently helmed Animals, the crime thriller movie - told The Hollywood Reporter: "I wouldn't use something that trains on or has learned from any work that is copywritten, or that is an intelligence created by a peer of mine or somebody that I look up to. That was why we created a dataset that was proprietary, so that it wouldn't have to be extractive."
Affleck explained that he wants to use AI in a collaborative, subtle way.
He said: "I'm already uncomfortable with some of the ways some tech companies behave around image and likeness, and I feel that actually, as my thesis and what was borne out was, if you give this to people who actually make films, you're going to get way better results. And we have, and we did.
"And like at Netflix, it's like, 'Hey, do you want to use this? Do you want to try this?' This is a discrete set of tools. It's not about making fake people or replacing anybody, ever. It's about another interesting post tool, and if you can see it or if you can tell what it is, like, you've ruined it."
