Gardening, enjoying a walk or keeping up with the grandchildren, the everyday activities you love, can become more difficult when pain gets in the way.

Active Spine Centre chiropractor Dr Jacob Black said understanding what matters to each patient is central to the practice’s approach.
“We want to know more than where it hurts,” he said.
“We want to understand how it affects your day and what you’d like to get back to doing.”
Active Spine Centre offers chiropractic care, remedial massage, shockwave therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy and naturopathy, supported by its reception and administration team.
“We take a holistic approach, considering each person’s health history, lifestyle, daily activities and goals,” Dr Black said.
“We welcome people at all stages of life, from babies through to older adults, tailoring our approach to the individual, using lower-force techniques where appropriate.”
For older patients, the focus is on supporting mobility, everyday function and independence.
“That might mean being more comfortable in the garden, sleeping with fewer interruptions or feeling more confident moving around,” Dr Black said.
“We consider bone health, existing medical conditions and medications before recommending care.
“We also discuss whether treatments such as spinal decompression are suitable for that person.”

The clinic assesses a range of muscle, joint and spinal complaints, including neck and back pain, headaches, sciatica, hip and shoulder pain, and symptoms associated with disc bulges, scoliosis and spinal degeneration.
Dr Black said clear explanations and realistic expectations are an important part of care.
“Our focus is on improving function and reducing symptoms, rather than promising to reverse degeneration or change a spinal curve,” he said.
“The first step is understanding what may be contributing to your pain.
“We then explain your options, including whether further investigation or referral to another health professional is needed.”
Treatment frequency is also individual.
“Many people may benefit from chiropractic care, including adjustments where appropriate, but the type and frequency of care should be tailored to the individual,” Dr Black said.
“Recommendations depend on your condition, your goals and how you respond.
“We review your progress and adapt the plan along the way.”
Private health rebates may be available for chiropractic and remedial massage, depending on a patient’s extras cover.
Eligible patients may also receive Medicare rebates for chiropractic appointments under a GP chronic condition management referral.
The reception team can explain fees and the claiming process before an appointment.
For anyone putting up with ongoing discomfort, Dr Black’s message is simple: age alone should not be a reason to ignore it.
“Getting older doesn’t mean you have to dismiss pain or reduced mobility as ‘just age’,” he said.
“Our aim is to help you understand your options and support you in staying active, independent and doing the things you enjoy.”
