That is a lot of mornings walking through the gate, a lot of lessons, a lot of friendships, a lot of mistakes, and a lot of moments that quietly shape who they become.
At Bourchier Street Primary School, they believe those days matter deeply.
“School should be a place where children feel safe, known and valued,” principal Gary Darma said.
“It should be a place where they learn to read, write, problem solve and think carefully.
“But it should also be a place where they learn how to be part of a community.
“Where they learn to persist when something is hard, to speak kindly, to contribute, to manage friendship challenges, to be brave enough to have a go, and to feel proud of who they are becoming.”
This year’s Education Week theme Showcase Your School, for Bourchier Street Primary School, does not just mean opening the doors for one week.
It means recognising the many ways a school community is showcased every day.
“We showcase our school when children share their writing with families, represent the school with pride, perform on stage, compete in sport, lead assemblies, care for younger students, or head off to camp and come home just that little bit more independent than when they left,” Mr Darma said.
He said camps, excursions, swimming, productions, special events and community days all play an important role in primary school life.
Adding that they give children experiences that stretch them beyond the classroom that help students discover new strengths, build confidence, form stronger friendships and create memories that often last long after the school year has ended.
“When we think about what makes Bourchier Street special, it is the feeling of belonging that runs through the school,” Mr Darma said.
“It is the care our staff show for students.
“It is the energy of our students. It is the support of our families.
“It is the shared belief that every child deserves a great primary school experience.”
On Monday, May 18, the school is hosting group tours through all areas of the school.
On Wednesday, May 20, the whole school will gather for Wellbeing Day focusing on kindness, gratitude, and mindfulness, finishing with a whole school colour run.
On Friday, May 22 at 9am, families are invited to Story Time in the school library.
“We are proud to showcase our school, because we are proud of the people, the learning, and the community that make it what it is,” Mr Darma said.
