Our Home asked Ron which native plants we could plant to enhance the streetscape of our homes and would thrive in local conditions.
Echuca-Moama’s weather varies from scorching summer days to below-freezing winter frost, so for any plant to succeed in your streetscape, you need to consider a few things.
“You think it is such a simple task, to pick half a dozen plants, but then I thought about it,” Ron said.
“It not only depends upon the site and conditions of your garden, but also the expectations of what people want from a garden.”
Ron said to consider the structure of your garden to suit the home, whether you want lawn or not, what you want to attract to your garden, and how much maintenance you want to do.
“The good thing about natives is that they come in such a wide range,” he said.
“Even within a species, there are many options for height, width, colour and texture.”
Ron suggested native plants you can choose from include:
Correa reflexa for winter colour
Eucalyptus erythronema for a small tree up to four metres high
Grevillea thelemanniana for ground cover
Lomandra for a spiky texture.
Thryptomene saxicola to add colour
Hardenbergia violacea “Mini-Haha” a native sarsaparilla to attract native butterflies
Eremophila waitii with deep purple flowers and soft grey foliage.
