A Parliamentary Committee is seeking submissions to an inquiry into the welfare of farmed pigs in Victoria.

The Legislative Council Economy and Infrastructure Committee inquiry will focus on regulatory frameworks, stunning methods, the impact of the 2017 industry-led phase-out of sow stalls, breeding and housing practices, and international industry best practice standards.

The committee is seeking submissions from the public, industry stakeholders, experts and advocacy groups to gather insights into the current condition of pig welfare in the state.

“We’re interested in hearing from all stakeholders about whether Victoria is following international best practice when it comes to the humane treatment of these animals,” committee chair Georgie Purcell said.

"Our inquiry will look into the extent and effectiveness of existing regulatory frameworks to understand how these regulations are applied, measure industry compliance, and evaluate the enforcement mechanisms in place, with a view to their ability to promote positive pig welfare outcomes.“

Submissions close on January 12. The committee intends to table its final report, including recommendations, to the Victorian Parliament by May 31, 2024.
