Police in Melbourne have launched an investigation after a fatal shooting in the suburb of Keilor in the city's north west.

The man killed is yet to be officially identified but media reports have named him as gangland identity Gavin Preston.

Officers say the shooting appears to have been targeted.

Emergency services were called to a cafe on the Old Calder Highway just before 10:30 on Saturday morning after a number of shots were fired.
