Corum Anthony Ash, 45, is accused of murdering a 74-year-old father of six who was on his morning walk in the southwest Sydney suburb of Yennora on Saturday, according to court documents.
Police alleged Ash assaulted the elderly man at 4.35am and left him unconscious on the street, where he was found and treated by paramedics.
Investigators were not able to speak with the alleged victim before he died in hospital on Monday.
Officers raided a property in Carlingford on Sunday and seized a number of items believed to be connected to the attack, police said in a statement.
Ash was arrested at a Carlingford property on Monday evening.
He was not required to appear before Parramatta Local Court when his case was mentioned on Tuesday morning and adjourned for eight weeks.
No plea is required at this early stage.
Court documents show Ash is also charged with a count of common assault in connection with an incident three days before he is alleged to have killed the 74-year-old.
Ash is alleged to have assaulted a man in Guildford at 8.52pm on Wednesday night.
