Wednesday marked 20 years since the 2005 Bali bombings, which saw four Australians among 20 people killed when multiple suicide and car bombs targeted the Indonesian province.
It was the second major attack on the island in three years, after a 2002 bombing killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.
Australia marked 20 years since the 2005 attack on Wednesday with memorial services in Bali and Newcastle, the home of three of the victims.
In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the enduring impact of the tragedy.
"Twenty years after the bombings in Bali, so many hearts are still heavy with the weight of loss," he said.
"At Kuta and Jimbaran beaches, lives and dreams and futures were senselessly stolen.
"Those who still carry the wounds, may you keep holding on to each other and may those who are gone live on in your love for them."
Foreign Minister Penny Wong paid tribute to the victims, along with the courage and resilience shown by survivors and families.
"As we mark this tragic anniversary, the bonds between the governments and people of Australia and Indonesia are stronger than ever," she said.
"We share a deep commitment to countering the scourge of violent extremism and will continue to work closely together to further our common interest in the peace and security of our region."
Australia's Consul-General in Bali attended the Indonesian service, while Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs Tim Watts was in Newcastle.
Of the 20 people who died, three were from Newcastle while another was Busselton in Western Australia.
Fifteen were from Indonesia and one was from Japan. Another 17 Australians were injured.
Joe Frost, who survived the attack, recalled realising how significant the damage from the blasts had been.
"When I arrived at the hospital the next morning, (my dad) laid out the devastation for me and in the exact terms … three people from our table had not survived, and some of the injuries were life-changing," he told the ABC.
