Since July 7, NSW police have patrolled the NSW/Victorian border allowing people living within the 50km border bubble with a permit to cross into NSW for employment, health, education, and essential services.
Sergeant Garth Quin of Sydney, stationed at the Corowa checkpoint last week, was blown away by the local hospitality.
“It has been unbelievable. I am going to ask for a transfer down here. Honestly, the locals have been incredible,” Sergeant Quin told The Free Press.
“We have had people deliver firewood to get us through those cold nights, plenty of food and even coffee.
“The two officers who did their rotation in the first week have even asked to come back,” he said.
While there is no massive queue of cars lining up, Sergeant Quin praised locals for their compliance.
“We have had no issues. The locals are all on side. They have even thanked us for keeping them safe,” Sergeant Quin said.
“The only reason we get a bank up of cars is generally because we are trying to work out a pass. Mostly for older people who are not particularly computer savvy.”
The border closure is expected to last for a minimum of six weeks (from July 7), with tougher rules introduced earlier this week for Border zone residents. New permits can be obtained from the Service NSW website.
