On Sunday, April 25, residents of Southern Cross Care Corowa came together to keep the ANZAC spirit alive and honour veterans and service members.

Two of the residents recognised were Bill Page and Keith Cutler.
Bill Page was born in Brisbane and enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1943, aged 18. He later joined the HMAS Nepal, a destroyer and for the next six months travelled back and forth to the Middle East, performing escort duties. On the return journey, Mr Page helped bring back wounded troops to Australia.
After Keith Cutler joined the Airforce in 1943, he did recruit training at Shepparton and then went to Deniliquin to train as an Armourer on Wirraway Aircraft.
After completing his training, Mr Cutler was posted to Darwin to assist the US Airforce to maintain the Liberator Aircraft. The 24th Squadron soon formed, and he boarded a transport ship to go to Morotai via New Guinea.
Mr Cutler also made many flights assisting medical staff in caring for the many injured and starved Prisoners of War.
CEO of Southern Cross Care NSW and ACT Helen Emmerson said it was important for residents to be able to commemorate the service of loved ones and friends with a little more normality this year.
“Anzac Day has long been steeped in tradition, but last year, COVID-19 restrictions changed the way we were able to honour those who served for our country,” she said.
“Anzac Day is a time of reflection for all our residents. Like Bill and Keith, many of our residents have served or know someone who did.
“We want everyone to take the time to commemorate the ANZAC spirit and the sacrifice of loved ones in our own personal ways.”
Sunday’s special commemoration service was led by the local RSL sub-branch. Bugler Joanne Howe sounded the last post, a wreath was laid, and an ANZAC lunch and ANZAC biscuits were enjoyed by all.
