The project, which was initially announced by the Victorian Government in May 2021, is making strides towards construction, with several crucial early works currently in progress.
These early stages include site preparation, establishing accessible paths within the site, conducting comprehensive surveys, and upgrading essential services.
“The new Rutherglen aged care facility is about providing older Victorians in regional areas with the right infrastructure to support quality aged care. It will meet a range of complex needs so residents can age in place as their health needs increase,” a spokesperson from the Department of Health said.
Site preparation is actively underway, overseen by Zauner Construction, involving the installation of necessary site amenities, creation of access paths for vehicles, clearing of vegetation, geotechnical surveys, and enhancements to power lines and poles in the vicinity.
The new aged care facility, managed by Indigo Health North, will house the relocated Glenview Community Care Nursing Home, providing a total of 50 beds, an increase from the previous 40-bed capacity.
Each resident will be accommodated in a private single-bedroom unit with a dedicated bathroom, ensuring their privacy, dignity, and individual care needs are met.
The revamped facility is designed to be dementia-friendly and adaptable to a wide spectrum of resident care requirements.
This includes a range of amenities such as a community room, sacred space, and common areas that foster interactions among residents, their families, and friends.
The facility’s façade and interior designs have been planned to provide a modern, secure, and comfortable living environment for residents, as well as a safe and efficient workplace for staff members.
Indigo Shire Council Mayor Sophie Price expressed delight about the project commencement, believed to be one of the largest investments in health for the area, highlighting its significance not only for Rutherglen but for the wider region as well.
“This is very exciting to see progress underway. This will be fantastic for the needs of not only Rutherglen but the wider region,” she said.
Indigo North Health CEO Shane Kirk expressed the same sentiments.
“We are pleased to see the works commencing for the Rutherglen aged care facility,” he said.

“Our staff, residents, and clients are looking forward to the purpose-built facility being completed, which will greatly improve the overall amenities and experience for all our current and future residents and clients and enable Indigo North Health to continue to provide essential, local community and residential services.”
This project aims to offer a solution that allows individuals to stay close to their support networks while receiving the necessary care.
The larger site, spanning 33-45 Main Street, enables the expansion of the facility’s bed count while ensuring that residents can enjoy the comfort of private rooms with ensuite bathrooms.
Early works are anticipated to continue throughout late 2023 with the entire project slated for completion by mid-2025.
