The day saw six teams compete in a fun, modified cricket tournament to help raise money for the McGrath Foundation. It is the fourth Pink Stumps event hosted by the club since 2019 with more than $29,776 raised so far.
The format on Sunday was a six-a-side competition with each side required to have at least one female and one under 14 player.
Despite numbers being down on previous years, event coordinator Ebony Goldsack was thrilled with the generosity of the community and sponsors.
“We had a late harvest this year combined with the pandemic which pushed the event back further than originally planned,” Ms Goldsack said.
“We are just blown away by that total amount of money raised and did not expect it with numbers being light this year.
“Once again our wonderful community and our sponsors have outdone themselves!”
Ms Goldsack said the club was touched by breast cancer in June 2018 which inspired them to host a Pink Stumps Days.
Oaklands Cricket Club Pink Stumps coordinator Ebony Goldsack with Janelle Day. Janelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, prompting the club to host the event.
“Our club treasurer Janelle Day who is an amazing community person was diagnosed with stage breast cancer,” Ms Goldsack said.
“Janelle discovered a lump in 2018 before she went away on holidays. She didn’t say anything to anyone and decided to get it checked out on her return. Little did she know this would change her life forever.
“It was a shock to us all and also the kick into action we needed to finally host the event.”
In the first year, the club set a goal to raise a modest $1000.
“We raised $5,500 in our first year which just absolutely blew us away,” Ebony said.
“In our second year we raised $7,200 and we were so incredibly proud. We’ve now committed to hosting the event every year since then.
“Last year, after the biggest harvest we had seen in many years, we moved the date to January. We had over 50 draws in our mega raffle and raised $8900 our biggest total to date.”
Ms Goldsack said she could not be prouder of the continued support and generosity received from sponsors and the community.
“Our small community of a few hundred people has now proudly raised over $29,000 for the McGrath Foundation and breast care nurses,” she said.
Oaklands Cricket Club’s Ebony Goldsack, Phil Goldsack (president), Zac Kerr and Janelle Day were blown away by the generosity of the community.
“It just shows that it only takes a few people to make a difference. A few busy weeks organising and a fabulous outcome. Thanks to everyone for all their support and their generosity with prizes for our raffle.”
Pink Stumps Day is the McGrath Foundation's largest community fundraising campaign which sees cricket clubs and teams, workplaces and schools across the nation turn their cricket game pink to fundraise for the McGrath Foundation.
