Abbey chops locks for kids

New Yarrawonga local and childcare worker Abbey A’Vard has completed the big chop to assist young children dealing with a cancer diagnosis and the loss of their hair.

Abbey, who has always had long hair, decided she wanted to chop her locks for the Wigs 4 Kids cause after seeing young children within her industry be isolated if they are different.

“The haircut went really well, I was feeling good. I had my family there for support,” Abbey said.

“I ended up raising $1241. The hair has been shipped off to Ella Wigmakers that partner with Wigs 4 kids.”

Wigs4Kids™ is a program that provides children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment with a bespoke wigs, completely free of charge.

It’s about helping kids feel more confident and comfortable during a really tough time. Children aged six –18 who are undergoing treatment for cancer and have experienced hair loss are eligible for a wig through the Wigs4Kids program, pending eligibility.

“The Wigs 4 kids program can be done at any hairdresser salon. I encourage other people to get involved to help kids in need,” Abbey said.

“All types of hair is accepted including dyed, bleached and coloured hair. The minimum length needed is 20cm.

“I would like to thank everyone who has shown support and donated to my fundraiser and to Leanne McQualter, Finishing Touch Hairdressing Yarrawonga for donating her time to do the big chop for me.”
