Tim McCurdy MP said the Ovens Valley's strong agricultural sector meant local producers and backyard flock owners should remain alert and maintain good biosecurity practices.
"Our region is home to many poultry producers and hobby farmers, and while there is no immediate threat, vigilance is our best defence," Mr McCurdy said.
"Anyone who finds sick or dead wild birds should not touch them.
“Instead, record the location and report the sighting to Agriculture Victoria; early reporting is critical to protecting our poultry industry and regional communities."
Agriculture Victoria has confirmed H5 bird flu has been detected in 53 wild birds in 37 locations across the state.
Current cases are confined to wild birds in south-west Victoria and Melbourne's south-east.
There have been no detections in poultry or livestock anywhere in Australia, and the risk to human health remains low.
Clusters of five or more sick or dead wild birds, or a single sick or dead seabird, waterbird, shorebird, bird of prey or marine mammal, should be reported immediately.
Suspected illness in poultry or livestock should be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
