Many of the boats have already been competing on Friday in the annual racing event that attracts thousands of boating enthusiasts and some of the world’s fastest Grand Prix Hydroplanes.
In recent decades, the event, which includes the coveted EC Griffith Cup and for the first time this year the National Driver’s Championship (round 2), has been proudly held with the assistance of the fantastic partnership between the Victorian Speed Boat Club (VSBC), Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business as well as major supporters such as the Mulwala Water Ski Club.
From today, April 26 through to Sunday 28 there will be even more excitement and noise with the festival atmosphere to include the Yarrawonga Foreshore Fair, an action-packed aerial show over Lake Mulwala with current Red Bull Air Race World Champion Matt Hall.
Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB) Executive Officer Noel Wright said large crowds of people swarmed to the Yarrawonga foreshore for this rejuvenated event over the last two years.
“We have planned for another big event,” Mr Wright said.
“There will be a market, a sideshow alley with rides for kids of all ages, a selection of food vendors, a licenced bar for 18+ and some great static displays.
“The three-day event has a charge to enter this year to help recoup some costs to bring the event to the region. But it will again be a great opportunity for families all over the region to enjoy the festivities and watch some exciting boat racing on the vast foreshore.
“The inclusion of the aerial show will again bring interest as Matt is the current Red Bull Air Race World Champion and a former Royal Australian Air Force top gun fighter pilot.
“Matt has placed third in his world championship racing debut in 2009 and has since accumulated seven wins and 25 podiums, making him the most successful air racing pilot in the modern era.
“We will again add Matt’s action-packed aerial show over Lake Mulwala to entertain the crowds at the event and offer the public the opportunity to experience the world’s most exhilarating joy flights from the Yarrawonga Aerodrome.”
The 2024 Boat Racing Carnival will again see Lake Mulwala play host to a full schedule of races for a variety of boat classes over the three days.
Another feature of the event this year is The National Driver’s Championship (Round 2). The championship is a high-adrenaline racing event where you will see the best-unlimited displacement machines go hard at it on their quest to be crowned the 2024 national champion.
And, of course, there is the coveted EC Griffith Cup, which is always a crowd drawer and where the big hydroplanes come out to play.
The event is generally the domain of the Grand Prix Hydroplanes, the world’s fastest circuit race boats which roar across the water at surface speeds in excess of 280kms per hour.
Lake Mulwala has a long, proud history with powerboat racing and, in 2010, hosted the World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships.
