Rutherglen has officially embraced the Christmas spirit with thanks to Santa’s helpers, also known as the Rutherglen Community Christmas Decorations Group, who have set up a Christmas display on the vacant land adjacent to Metro Service Station.

The committee, who have been working together to bring festive cheer to Rutherglen for around seven years, set up the festive display last Friday.
“The town had nothing before we started doing this,” group member Deb Stefanides told the Free Press.
“We got together and mostly improvised with materials with the help of community groups, schools, various individuals and businesses. Bunnings Yarrawonga have been particularly supportive donating paint and timber.”
The Christmas decorations are made from recycled materials, including old pallets for Christmas trees, and wreaths made from old bicycle wheels. The display also includes solar lights for a dazzling display at night time.

“We are encouraging local families to come down and see the decorations. It’s a great photo opportunity, with Santa’s train or the cheeky elf. The decorations are made by locals for the community’s enjoyment.”
“We would like to sincerely thank the many groups and people who have supported us in maintaining, creating and assembling our town’s Christmas decorations.”
Alistair Shanks and his dog were only too happy to have their picture taken with the Rutherglen Community Christmas Decorations Group’s Santa train.
