In a long-standing tradition that harks back to 1988, every year Federation Council adds a fresh section of footpath to the streets surrounding the school for graduating students to write their names into, adding their legacy to those who came before them.
Along with carving their names into the streetscape the students also plant a tree on the school grounds, to add to the growing number of graduation trees or to replace any that have perished.
Principal, Jo Bellette says it is symbolic of their time and growth at Corowa High School.
“It’s such a good tradition for them to be a part of,” Dr Bellette said.
“When past students return, they all go looking for their tree and remember their time here, and these kids will now get to do the same.
“Some of them even get to add to their parent’s legacy.”
This year, the Class of 2025 planted a crepe myrtle.
Molly Maffei, Ella Webb and Shaira Batang plant the crepe myrtle on behalf of this year’s graduates.
Joined by Dr Bellette, deputy principal Phillip Le Lievre and year 12 advisor Glen Bobbin, the graduating students gathered as school captains, Ella Webb and Zack Llewellyn-Jones, and vice captains, Shaira Batang and Molly Maffei, planted the tree, then paid homage to their final year at Corowa High School.
Ella spoke of their experiences from this year and what they had gained as graduating students.
“I think communication was where we really grew a lot this year,” Ella said.
“Going to Sydney for the Lion’s Youth of the Year awards was definitely a highlight.
“And going to Parliament House and meeting the Governor-General was pretty special too.”
While Ella has not yet settled on a specific career - she would like to take the time to explore an electrical trade - her contemporaries have selected more definitive paths.
Co-captain Zack Llewellyn-Jones is keen on forging a career in the shipping industry.
Vice-captain Shaira Batang has applied to Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga to study veterinary technology.
Co-vice-captain Molly Maffei has already been accepted into a clinical psychology degree at the University of Melbourne via the Kwong Lee Dow scholarship program.
