What began as a small step of hope has become a path walked by hundreds, united in the fight against cancer by raising funds and awareness for cancer services in the Riverina and North East region.
The walk is the major fundraising event of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund, with Corowa hosting its own walk on Sunday, November 9.
While the main walk will occur in Albury on the same day, residents of Corowa, Wahgunyah, Rutherglen and the surrounding areas are invited to participate in a local walk to raise funds as the Corowa and District team.
“We have just opened our Corowa and District registrations,” committee member Casandra Hughes said.
“We had 72 walkers in 2024 and raised $10,000 and with the additional support from the Sunshine Walk team in Albury we are hoping to increase our numbers and the money raised.
“The committee is excited to have the full support of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund behind us this year and we encourage all locals to jump onto the Sunshine Walk website and register their participation as a member of the Corowa & District team.
“We know our area is very generous when it comes to donating for a good cause, and cancer is something that touches most of us in one way or another during our lives.
“Having this amazing facility so close to us is worth walking and donating to support.”
Team Corowa will start and finish their walk at Rowers Park with participants able to opt for a 5km, 10km or an exciting addition to proceedings this year, the 20km walk.
“Participants will be walking along the great river paths we have in both Wahgunyah and Corowa,” Ms Hughes said.
“The course will be clearly marked so there will be no chance of getting lost.
“Some of our regular participants wanted to do the 20km last year so we included it in the last minute, but this year we have added it to the options early for participants to choose their favourite distance.”
In the lead-up to the walk, Team Corowa will once again sell raffle tickets as a fundraising activity outside of the walk registrations.
“Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund through generous donation provide great prizes and we have sold several winning tickets over the past few years,” Ms Hughes said.
“Tickets will be available Melbourne Cup weekend outside Rutherglen Newsagency and Gyles Newsagency in Corowa. We are looking at other locations, but they have not yet been confirmed.”
Because of teams like Team Corowa participating in the Sunshine Walk, and every step taken by the community, vital cancer services continue to reach those who need them most, right here at home.
The walk is not competitive but about enjoying a day out with family and friends while supporting a great cause.
