Council's strategy for responsible pet ownership

A new four-year Domestic Animal Management Plan has been adopted at Gannawarra Shire Council, guiding animal welfare in the region.

Adopted at council’s December meeting, the plan focuses on minimising wildlife impacts from cats and dogs, and ensures sustainable management of domestic animals.

“Council plays an important role in ensuring that all pet owners are looking after their animals humanely,” Mayor Garner Smith said.

While developing the new plan, the council reviewed its current practices and heard community feedback to introduce new measures.

As a result, a training register for authorised officers will be established, community education programs are to be expanded, and registration strategies will be strengthened.

Enhanced compliance programs for nuisance animals and illegal breeders will also be introduced, as will an improved annual evaluation mechanism.

“Residents will see greater promotion of campaigns relating to responsible pet ownership to ensure the number of cats and dogs found roaming reduces across the municipality,” Cr Smith said.
