Demerit rewards to be permanent

Safe drivers across NSW will receive an early Christmas gift, with the NSW Government confirming the Demerit Point Reward Program will become permanent.

The initiative, first trialled in 2023, removes one demerit point from unrestricted licence holders who remain offence-free for 12 months.

It’s designed to encourage responsible driving and reward motorists who consistently make safe choices.

More than 1.7 million drivers have already benefited from the program, and this year alone, over one million licence holders are on track to have a point wiped if they continue to drive safely.

Legislation to enshrine the program will be introduced when Parliament resumes in February 2026.

It will complement the government’s broader road safety strategy, which includes a record $2.8 billion investment over four years in education, infrastructure upgrades, enforcement, and technology.

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said the program is about “backing commonsense reform” and encouraging drivers to maintain safer habits.

With the busy Christmas and holiday period approaching, motorists are urged to slow down, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence.
