Families and travellers flocked to Thompsons Beach on Tuesday, January 6, enjoying a swim and a picnic in the sun ahead of the forecast heatwave.

The banks of the lake were covered with families relaxing on blankets in the shade, while others played frisbee down by the water.
There were plenty of boats and jet skis and the newly opened café Max @ the beach was busy too.
People took their boats and jet skis out on the water at Thompsons Beach.

Among the beach-goers was Melbourne mum-of-two Tammy Marsh, who had a picnic set up on the grass with her two kids.
“We're here on a family holiday, we come down here every year, so we always come to this beach,” she said.
Tammy said they loved the beach because of the calm water, nice shady areas, the playground and café.
“It’s a great place,” she said.
Greg Smith was also at the beach with his wife, Karin. They had travelled all the way from Germany.
“We have been travelling for the last four weeks around Australia. I'm originally from western Victoria but have been living in Germany for the last 20 years,” Greg said.
“It's just a nice spot down here, we’ve really enjoyed it, especially this sort of weather.”

Greg and Karin were grateful for the warm weather, dreading their return to Germany, where the weather will be freezing cold.
“It’s going to be a temperature shock when we go back there ... going from 40-plus to minus 10,” Greg said.
Numurkah local Vicki Dwyer was relaxing on the grass with family and friends, who were set up for the whole day with snacks, camping chairs and a picnic blanket laid out.
“We love this spot, it's a good spot for swimming,” she said.
